About me

Michael Richard Stannard

I was born in London on 24th September 1949 and educated at Cottesmore (Preparatory) School, Sussex, and Charterhouse, Surrey, followed by Trinity College, Oxford, where I took my degree of Batchelor of Arts in Jurisprudence in 1972. I then attended the College of Law in London and qualified for call to the Bar of England and Wales. I was called to the Bar in 1973 and remained a member of the Bar until December 2005. I became a Master of Arts (Oxford) in 1977.
I did my pupillage first in 4 Pump Court tax chambers, as pupil to the late James Holroyd Pearce (later Q.C) and then in 9 Old Square, Lincolns Inn, Chancery chambers as pupil to John Chadwick (later the Right Honourable Sir John Chadwick, one of Her Majesty's Lords Justices of Appeal). I left the UK permanently in 1974, initially moving to Jersey, where I joined a local legal practice before starting to practise on my own.

I speak good French and can converse in German.   I deal with Taxation Problems, Offshore Tax and Asset Protection Structures. I have specialised in this area since 1973. I will also advise on enquiries and prosecutions by the tax authorities.

My particular interest is in specialist tax planning: each case is different and needs to be tackled accordingly. However, amongst my mass-produced schemes in the U.K., each of which has now been stopped by legislation, were a scheme to avoid Inheritance (formerly Capital Transfer) Tax by use of purchased offshore trusts and a scheme to avoid Capital Gains Tax by the transfer of losses via charities into trusts, interests therein then being sold to taxpayers with gains who, as the law then stood, could offset the losses against their own gains.

I qualified as a private pilot in the United Kingdom in 1975, taking my instrument rating in 1981. I also hold a Airline Transport Pilots Licence issued by the United States of America.

I am married and have had three daughters, of whom two survive.

My hobbies include travel, ski-ing and riding. The less said about food and wine the better!
